WHAT IS A VASECTOMY?

A vasectomy is an office procedure that is an effective form of permanent birth control for men.  The vasectomy blocks the tubes in the scrotum from transporting sperm to your partner.

WHAT IS THE VASECTOMY INSTITUTE PROCESS?

1) Find a vasectomy provider that you would like to have perform your vasectomy.

2) Call to make an appointment 

We will send you all the information needed, including paper work, preoperative and postoperative instructions and an online video which explains the vasectomy.  We will also send reminders leading to your vasectomy and after.

3) You will show up on the day of your vasectomy, sign your consent and have your procedure*.  Then go home and relax.

what are the benefits of a vasectomy?

There are a number of benefits to getting a vasectomy:

HOW IS THE NO SCALPEL TECHNIQUE DIFFERENT FROM THE TRADITIONAL VASECTOMY?

The differences in the vasectomy technique differs by how the initial entry is made into the skin.  A traditional vasectomy involves the use of a scalpel to enter the skin. During the no scalpel vasectomy a small window  is made into the skin to create an opening.  The remainder of the procedure is the same. 

IS THE VASECTOMY PERMANENT?

The vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control and it is very effective. It has higher rates of success than most other forms of birth control.  The failure rate of a vasectomy is about 1 in 2,000.

DO I NEED A CONSULTATION PRIOR TO COMING IN FOR MY VASECTOMY?

It depends.  In most regions and if you have commercial insurance in the United States you don’t need a consultation before your procedure. 

That being said some physicians will require a consultation before scheduling.  Also, most medical assistance programs ( i.e, Medicaid) have a number of stipulations which you will have to meet and thus a consultation may be necessary if you use your insurance.  Some requirements are age, competency and a required length of time from the time of the consultation and the procedure. 

For example, in New York City a consultation is required before the vasectomy and the minimum age required is 21 years old. During the consultation a consent must be signed and a waiting period of thirty days is mandatory before the vasectomy can be performed. 

 

Can I have a FACE TO FACE or virtual CONSULTATION?

Of course you can.  Anyone can have a face to face consultation with the physician that they choose. The practices that offer telemedicine (virtual consultations)  will be listed on their profile.  

There are vasectomy providers that may require you to come in for a consultation depending on your age and if you have had children in the past.  

What if I my vasectomy physician is located in New York City or I have Government insurance?

New York City and many government issues insurances have several laws that have to be followed in order to obtain a vasectomy. 

These rules vary but in many cases the person undergoing the vasectomy must be 21 years of age.  They must be legally able to give consent and be of sound mind.  After signing the consent for the vasectomy there is a 30 day waiting period and the consent will expire after 180 days.

DOES MY INSURANCE COVER THE PROCEDURE?

The answer is maybe. That depends on your insurance plan. It also depends if your provider accepts your insurance.

The CPT code (procedure code) is 55250 for the vasectomy.

Is the Vasectomy institute responsible for any complications from the vasectomy or scheduling issues?

No, the vasectomy institute is not responsible. The vasectomy institute connects physicians to patients.  Therefore any scheduling changes or complications with the procedure are the responsibility of the provider. 

 

WHAT ARE THE COMPLICATIONS OF THE VASECTOMY?

The rate of complications from a vasectomy are very low but even great physicians that perform vasectomies can have complications. Some risks are bleeding, infection, a connection between the vas deferens and the skin called a fistula, long lasting testicular pain, spontaneous re-connection of the vas deferens resulting in a pregnancy and also chronic pain and tenderness of the testicles.

WHEN CAN I HAVE SEX AFTER MY VASECTOMY?

You can have gentle protected sex one week after your vasectomy (this length of time may be different depending your vasectomy doctor). You will not be cleared to have unprotected sex until there is verification that you do not have enough sperm to have a pregnancy.  The semen analysis will be performed 8-14 weeks after your vasectomy. 

WHAT SHOULD I DO TO PREPARE FOR THE VASECTOMY?

After scheduling your vasectomy. The instructions for before and after your vasectomy will be available on our website (instructions menu).  There is also an area in the instructions page where you will be able to sign up for tips and additional instructions in Spanish and English that will be emailed to you.  

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY VASECTOMY?

You should purchase a pair of compression shorts or a jock strap that you will wear to your vasectomy.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF MY VASECTOMY FAILING?
There is a about a 1 in 2,000 rate of your vasectomy failing. This is called recanalization or re-connection and it is a rare complication. It means that you are NOT sterile. It can be diagnosed by the presence of sperm in the post-vasectomy specimens or it can occur years later even after the semen analysis initially should no sperm.
ARE THERE LONG-TERM HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH VASECTOMY?

There are no conclusive long-term health risks that we know of related to the vasectomy procedure at this point. 

WILL A VASECTOMY AFFECT MY SEX LIFE?

Your vasectomy should not have an affect on your erections, sex drive (libido), hormone levels or sexual performance. It should not affect your orgasm or volume of ejaculation.

That being said there are men that experience problems with erections, orgasms, volume of fluid and may have a lower libido after their vasectomy and is thought to occur for other psychological reasons.

IS MY VASECTOMY REVERSIBLE?

You should consider the vasectomy as a permanent form of birth control. That being said there are a number of men that change their mind later in life.

A vasectomy reversal is an option for some and it can be successful.  The good thing is that many of the members in The Vasectomy Institute also preform the vasectomy reversal.

 

Will a vasectomy protect me from sexually transmitted infections?

No, a vasectomy does not protect a man or a women from sexually transmitted infections. The reason to obtain a vasectomy is to prevent a pregnancy
