VASECTOMY GLOSSARY

ADC New York Administrative Code (Title 17 Chapter 4) Standards governing the performance of sterilizations – A set of laws that explain the guidelines of a male interested in undergoing a vasectomy in New York City.

Epididymis – A tube that connects the testicles to the vas deferens in the male reproductive tract.

Contraception – the use of artificial methods or procedures to prevent a pregnancy

Granuloma – A small lump at the edge of the vas deferens after a vasectomy.  It contains inflammatory cells and, in some cases, may be tender to the touch.

No Needle Vasectomy – The no needle technique uses a specialized pressure mechanism which pulses anesthetic through the skin. This is used instead of a small needle to apply anesthesia to the skin during traditional vasectomy.

No Scalpel Vasectomy – During the vasectomy procedure when a window is made through the skin in the scrotum with a small instrument to gain access to the vas deferens instead of using a scalpel. Then the vas deferens are divided to stop the flow of sperm in the male reproductive tract.

Nitronox – A trade name of a machine used to deliver nitrous oxide to reduce pain and anxiety during a procedure.

Pro-NOX – A trade name of a machine used to deliver nitrous oxide to reduce pain and anxiety during a procedure.

Prostate – A gland located between the bladder and the penis and in front of the rectum.

Traditional Vasectomy Procedure – During the vasectomy a small nick is made in the scrotum with a scalpel to gain access to the vas deferens.  Then the vas deferens are divided to stop the flow of sperm in the male reproductive tract.

Urethra – The tube that carries urine or sperm from the prostate to outside the body

Vasectomy Reversal – an operative procedure that surgically reconnects the vas deferens.  The medical term is called a vasovasostomy.

Vas deferens – A pair of tubes one on the right and one on the left of the scrotum.  The vas deferens transports sperm from the testicle to urethra.
